They called it a “dark room” back in the film

They called it a “dark room” back in the film days.

When it comes to working with unexposed film, the room needs to be 100% dark. Zero light coming in. Once the film is developed or made into negatives, you can use a red light for the remainder of the process. The red light allows you to see, while not ruining the light sensitive paper you print your photos on.

Now, with digital photography we don’t use dark rooms. We use LightRoom (see what Adobe did there, with that clever software name!!)

When I am color correcting and editing photos on my computer, I need it dark. A dark(ish) room helps me see the color and exposure properly.

Since I don’t love working in a dark cave my entire day, I outsource much of this work!!

I worked with Deb’s marketing lead Emily Manning, to create updated photos for Deb, which conveyed her wisdom, connection to spirit and also showcasing her fun side - because Deb is a hoot! She had me laughing the whole day we were together, from telling her “Dad jokes” to cracking me up with well-timed zingers, I fell in love with Deb almost instantly.

The photos of Deb were taken in San Diego’s Balboa Park and surrounding areas, and we used elements of bridges and gates to suggest Deb’s guidance and ability to speak to those who have crossed over.

1997. Boston. Rollerblades and a film camera. Does it get more 90s than this?!

I moved to Boston immediately after I graduated college. I had 2 friends in the city, and no job. But I did have some sick Rollerblades 😂😂

I would spend hours exploring the city on my Rollerblades taking photos with one of my grandfather’s old cameras.

My “plan” when I moved from NJ to Boston was to get a job at an ad agency. Because I had a degree in advertising, and I wanted to make ad campaigns. Turns out, 22 year old me with no experience and a flimsy college portfolio of work wasn’t exactly what ad agencies were looking for.

But, lucky for me, it was the beginning of the booming dot-com era and there were plenty of jobs to be had in Boston.

I got my first job working in a high tech recruiting company. I still remember my salary! I got paid $23,000 a year, and it opened my eyes to the world of tech. Several years later I took a job with TV Guide and that’s what brought me to California.

I no longer have the Rollerblades but I still have that camera. 📷 🛼

When the photoshoot involves an avocado orchard + a Sprinter van + beach photos + my go-to Oceanside brewery … it’s all my favorite things about living in San Diego!!

This real estate team is made up of three people who love living in North County San Diego. Husband and wife Tracie and Ryan moved from Redondo Beach to Fallbrook, as they were seeking more land and were attracted to the lifestyle of North County. This move was prompted by the addition of their kids. They had a desire to give them a childhood with land to play on and an understanding of how their food was grown, which led them to buy a house on an avocado farm, next to Lizzie’s family home.

After being away from home for many years, Lizzie moved back to North County because she and her husband valued the lifestyle that North County can provide to their family. As an adult, Lizzie has a new-found appreciation for what she grew up with.

We started our photoshoot at Lizzie’s family’s home, on an old avocado orchard nestled in the mountains of Fallbrook. This property has stunning views of the valley and lots of orchards to wander.

We moved on the beautifully styled Space One Ten in Fallbrook, to create photos of them inside, working as a team.

Ryan is an avid surfer + beach-goer, so we grabbed their van and took it with us to the beach, but not before stopping by one of my favorite breweries in Oceanside, South O Brewing, to have a few of their Mexican Lagers.

Through this mix of photos, we are attempting to show that North County San Diego is one of the best places to live, especially for people raising kids and enjoying nature.

To put it simply, Samantha is a powerhouse with heart. She describes her core archetypes as Queen, Teacher, Hermit, and Warrior. Love that combo!

She is a business growth advisor to consultants, helping them earn more money consulting with corporate clients.

Coming from a leadership role in Coca-Cola, Samantha knows full well the layered and complicated components of working inside a large corporate environment. She takes this skill set and helps women expand and grow as consultants.

I met Samantha many years ago when I photographed her as part of a content building retreat hosted by Tamara Thompson and her team. I was immediately drawn to her straight-shooter personality balanced with feminine sensibilities, sprinkled with spiritual wisdom. I’ve been following her business journey and have been impressed with how she’s set up her beautiful life. She lives in Martha’s Vineyard and also part-time in Arkansas, allowing her to truly enjoy the flexibility of working remotely.

She booked a photoshoot when she came to San Diego to meet a consulting client of hers, who lived in Canada. If you’re going to travel to meet your client in the winter, why not choose beautiful sunny San Diego as your destination?!!

On this “photography day”, I want to throw it

On this “photography day”, I want to throw it back to where it all started for me: my grandfather. He was a photographer in WW2 and he made his living as a photographer. I was young when he passed away so I never learned directly from him, but I now have his camera collection. It’s with one of his cameras that I learned the art of photography.

I remember the dark room my grandfather built in the basement of his house. As a kid I was endlessly fascinated by all that equipment and with his old cameras.

My Aunt Mary also inspired me with her travel photography (she perfected the selfie before it had a name - she always made a point to capture herself in a reflection in her travel photos. As a kid I thought that was SO COOL!!)

My Mom took photo classes when I was a little kid. I remember going to a photo critique with my mom. Everyone in class showed slides of their work and the instructor gave feedback about each photo. Me, observing all of this, understood that photography is an art form and I respected this craft from an early age.

I come from a family of photographers. I am grateful to have exposure (no pun intended) to photography from a young impressionable age.

To be able to be a photographer and to make a living with this profession is something I’m deeply grateful for!!
